Georgia College Communication and Music Professors Win Excellence Award

Georgia College Assistant Professors of Communication and Music, Angela Criscoe and Dr. Dana Gorzelany-Mostak, recently won an “Award of Excellence” from the Broadcast Education Association for co-creating a digital lecture: “Songs in the Key of President C: Music on the Campaign Trail.” Their video will be screened at BEA’s upcoming conference in October at the University of Houston.

Gorzelany-Mostak created the digital lecture last spring for the Society of American Music (SAM). Criscoe produced the video of Gorzelany-Mostak’s lecture for BEA. The broadcast association is “the premiere international academic media organization driving insights, excellence in media production and career advancement for educators, students and professionals,” Criscoe said.

“When Dana came to me with the idea, I was immediately excited about the collaboration,” she said. “I love music, and her topic of interest—along with the research she had conducted—plays out well in the video. The acceptance by SAM and the award of excellence from BEA is an honor and encouragement for further collaboration.”

The YouTube video uses soundtrack provided by guitar instructor Doug Bassett, junior music major Turner Howell and the Max Noah Singers, under direction of Dr. Jennifer Flory. Sophomore music major and Trax on the Trail research assistant Haley Strassburger served as music supervisor on the project, co-writing the screenplay. Daniel McDonald, operations manager for WRGC, assisted with the recording.

“This is a true example of collaboration, involving faculty and students, at its best,” said Dr. Don Parker, Georgia College’s newly-appointed music chair.

In 2015, Gorzelany-Mostak created Trax on the Trail, a website that chronicles political campaign music in U.S. presidential elections. Her award-winning digital lecture is one of three being featured on YouTube for the Society for American Music (SAM) 2018 Digital Lecture in American Music series.
