Amazon reportedly set to spend $1B on sci-fi series

Amazon Studios wants to create a show that’s as buzzworthy as “Game of Thrones” and reportedly plans to acquire the rights to a popular Chinese book series, “The Three-Body Problem.”

Rights for the 2008 sci-fi novel by Cixin Liu could sell for $1 billion, The Financial Times reports. It would be Amazon’s biggest acquisition, far outpacing the $500 million it spent to develop a series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

The three-book series, formally called “Remembrance of Earth’s Past,” won a Hugo award and has garnered the praise of former President Barack Obama, who called it “just wildly imaginative, really interesting,” Vanity Fair reports.
