Escobar: Atlanta Film Festival growth mirrors TV/movie industry

0

As the Atlanta Film Festival kicks off, its leader talked about the 10-day event and what it means to the city.

The festival opens with the screening of “Blindspotting” at the Plaza Theatre in Atlanta’s Poncey-Highland community. With a record 7,600 film submissions entered for this year’s event, the final lineup includes 58 feature-length films and 150 short films from 56 countries. Those totals make it the most diverse, by number of countries represented, and the largest, by number of films, in Atlanta history.

“This year is going to be huge,” said Chris Escobar, executive director of both the festival and the Atlanta Film Society, which hosts it. “Every year we work throughout the year to make it the biggest best event we can put on for our humble modestly funded nonprofit. This year we’ve outdone ourselves. We have not only some incredible independent works from around the world, but we have some amazing celebrity guests, most of which have been announced but some that will be surprises.”
