Local nonprofit Georgia STAND-UP is offering “We Show Up,” a four-week workforce development program focused on creating skilled workers for Georgia’s film and television industry.

Instead of turning away from Georgia after the state passed the controversial Heartbeat Bill earlier this May, the group told Deadline that it wants to “advocate for the rights of women in TV and film, especially in situations like these.”

“I’m making a bet that as Georgians learn how this industry actually works, they will want to maintain it. I’m pressing ahead with our expansion in the belief and faith that wise Georgia minds will prevail.”

Now that Tyler Perry has become the first African-American to own a major film studio outright, he says that he plans on using a portion of the 330-acre property to house disadvantaged women and children.

Georgia’s relationship to the motion picture industry is not new. From Gone with the Wind’s sweeping presentation in 1939 to Forrest Gump, Glory, Fried Green Tomatoes, Driving Miss Daisy, and Sweet Home Alabama in later decades, blockbusters have been filmed in the state for years.
