A term-limited Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, whose second and final term as the state’s chief executive ends in a little more than two years, took an early victory lap Tuesday in Athens.
Speaking to a luncheon crowd of incumbent and incoming state legislators attending the Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators at the University of Georgia’s Center for Continuing Education, Deal touted improvements in the state’s economy and the state government’s fiscal condition since the beginning of his first term in 2011.

The film industry has been a significant part of the state’s economic development, Deal said. In the past year, 245 productions brought $2 billion into the state, he said, creating an overall economic impact of $7 billion.
The film academy now operating on four of the state’s technical college campuses has, Deal said, been “a giant step in the right direction” for keeping the film industry as a vital part of the state economy.
