As a child, Jason Winn loved watching the movies “The Goonies,” “Batteries Not Included” and “Short Circuit.” They were films the entire family could watch.

When he grew up and became a filmmaker, Winn wanted to make his own movie for the whole family. Now, he has.

Winn, a part-time instructor of film at the University of North Georgia (UNG), directed the new feature-length film “Shifting Gears,” which opens nationwide Friday, March 23.

“It’s very humbling,” Winn said, regarding the biggest budget and release film he has worked on during his career. “Being a filmmaker is not what you do, it’s who you are. And at this point in my career, I’m grateful.”
