We are told the phrase “banned in Boston” was coined to describe the efforts of the New England Watch and Ward Society, a censoring organization that liked to limit prurient expression.
Those watching wardens eventually gave up, but one of the last books they banned was “God’s Little Acre,” written by a preacher’s son named Erskine Caldwell, who began his writing career as an Augusta Chronicle sports correspondent.
