Let’s face it. It’s really cool that Georgia is known as Y’allywood. In addition to Will Smith and Emily Blunt, Georgia is host to Mel Gibson, Dwayne Johnson, Naomi Watts, Mark Wahlberg, and many more A-List celebrities, all thanks to our booming film industry.
So how is it that Georgia became the Hollywood of the south, with 17 major movies filmed here in 2016 alone? The Georgia Department of Economic Development has been incentivizing production companies by providing a 20 percent transferable tax credit for expenses associated with feature films, television series, commercials, music videos, animation and game development.
Another 10 percent can be earned by embedding and linking a Georgia promotional logo on approved projects. To be eligible, a production company only needs to spend $500,000 or more on production and post-production costs in Georgia. Expenditures could be through either a single project or multiple projects. In the fiscal year ending July 2017, Gov. Nathan Deal announced that the film industry spent $2.7 billion in Georgia, translating to a $9.5 billion boost to our economy.
