Ecosystems, Innovation and Georgia as a “Geography of Genius”

By David Sutherland

When considering the necessary elements of innovation for economic growth, so-called “ecosystems” take a key role. The concept of Innovation Ecosystems for economic development outlines a set of intentional work toward the establishment of networks of labor, capability and financial investment and incentives guided by a set of public policies fostering economic growth.

A few years ago, while I was developing my theory of Econo-Diversity, I ran across a framework that has stuck with me and has driven my understanding of Innovation Ecosystems: Eric Weiner’s “Geographies of Genius.”

The idea behind “Geographies of Genius” is simple. Some places just have the right mix to spark creativity and big ideas. Examples such as Athens in 455 BC, Florence during the Renaissance, Silicon Valley during the Dotcom era, and today’s Georgia totally fit the bill. With busy cities, significant industrial history, and a blend of cultures, it’s easy to see why Georgia has what it takes to be a hotspot for genius.

One thing that stands out about Georgia is how much it encourages people to be creative and push boundaries. Atlanta has been a playground for artists, entrepreneurs, and tech innovators for decades. Hubs like Georgia Tech, the Atlanta University Center, SCAD, UGA, Emory and others bring in intellectual leaders from many different disciplines, mixing different backgrounds and ways of thinking. That mix sets the stage for new ideas to generate and grow.

Connections and collaboration matter too. Georgia’s music scene is legendary—think of artists from Ray Charles to Outkast—and it keeps creative energy flowing. The film industry has exploded here, earning Atlanta the nickname “Hollywood of the South,” and it’s all thanks to people working together, good infrastructure, and supportive policies.

This includes the establishment of tech centers focusing on AI, Fintech, and Medtech such as Atlanta Tech Village, the largest startup center in the Southeast US, and whole startup communities such as SoDo, drawing innovators from all over the world. Networks like these help ideas bounce around and evolve, the exact foundation that “Geographies of Genius” require.

In fact, in 2025, Georgia achieved a record breaking $26.3 billion in new economic development. Georgia-based venture capital firms played a major role in this, participating in over 230 early-stage deals with a strong focus on AI (40 percent of deals,) SaaS (26 percent,) and Climate/Cleantech (15 percent.) Space Tech, though it had fewer deals, saw significant high-value investment, representing $167M or 21 percent of total local startup funding. This shows clear additions to the State’s traditional tech segments such as AgTech and FinTech.

Diversity is another key factor. Georgia has both city life and country life, citizens who grew up here and newcomers from all over the globe.

In fact, 18 percent of Georgia’s total population and 28 percent of Atlanta’s population are first or second generation residents. That mix makes for a lively, ever-changing community where different viewpoints lead to fresh ways of thinking.

And places like Savannah, with its world-renowned art scene, old-school architecture and SCAD – one of the top design schools in the world – show how blending the past and present can drive creativity, with Macon, Columbus, Athens and more all following this trend.

Lastly, Georgia has always been about adapting and rising above challenges. The state’s history is full of big moments and movements that built resilience and a willingness to try new things. That spirit is alive today, fueling Georgia’s growth in culture, tech, and more.

By ticking the boxes for environment, teamwork, diversity, and adaptability, Georgia stands out as a place where genius can thrive—and its story of creativity keeps on unfolding.
