The groundbreaking series, which aired from 1987 to 1993, followed the lives of students and faculty members of the fictional Hillman College, an HBCU based in Virginia. Although “A Different World” never filmed scenes in Georgia, exteriors for Hillman were shot at Spelman College.

Drive around Atlanta, Georgia, long enough and the city starts to feel flat, crisscrossed with highways and personal injury lawyer billboards, home to Walmarts the size of football fields. This is, improbably, where Millie Bobby Brown – Stranger Things star, Netflix golden goose and self-made lifestyle millionaire – has chosen to base herself.

Monthly screenings hosted by Reel Friends feature local shorts, live filmmaker commentary, and networking for Georgia’s growing film scene. The next event takes place Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 8:30 p.m., and will feature a curated lineup of Atlanta-made short films followed by an interactive live director commentary.
