The bank, known for its commitment to the entertainment industry, is donating the backpacks filled with supplies to 69 elementary and middle schools, and nonprofit organizations in California, Nevada, New York, Georgia, Tennessee, Minnesota, Washington State, and Washington, D.C.
In addition to raising over $40,000 for the cause, most of the 250 attendees, including representatives from Turner and the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, made a commitment to mentor, host job shadows or internships, or speak at schools across Atlanta to expose high school students to careers in the film and media industry.
“So many of my friends that I met through Dragon Con are working in the film industry here in Atlanta because when it started to grow, they were looking for people who could make costumes and do makeup, so Dragon Con was a great breeding ground for that.”
As the film industry and landscape changes in Georgia, students are realizing they don’t have to move to New York or Los Angeles to be successful in film. “Now we have Georgia natives who are realizing they can stay at home and do what they love.”
Kennesaw State has become the new home for The Georgia News Lab, an investigative reporting collaborative that has received multiple awards for the training of young investigative journalists.
Beyond receiving instruction and how-to advice in each class, students will roll up their sleeves and collaborate with the instructor and each other with creative brainstorms, process and content critiques and real-time discussion following in-class viewing of movie examples.
Theater owner Michael Furlinger announced in a statement that the theater will be sold next month to Atlanta Film Society executive director Christopher Escobar.
